Summer on Lake St. Clair: The Ultimate Multi-Species Factory
By Fancy Fish Charters
When summer arrives, there’s no place like Lake St. Clair. This incredible fishery offers anglers the chance to chase trophy fish and fill coolers all in the same day. Summer is all about variety—whether you’re after hard-fighting smallmouth bass, weed bed walleye, jumbo perch, or the fish of ten thousand casts, the mighty Muskie.
Walleye
Summer walleye fishing continues to impress across Lake St. Clair. While traditional trolling puts fish in the boat, casting has become one of our favorite ways to target these fish. Using light jigs, plastics, we’re finding groups of active fish and putting clients on exciting action. Jigging still playing a major roll early in the morning.
Perch Are On the Move
As summer progresses, perch schools shift with changing weed growth and bug hatches. Staying mobile and adapting to their movements has been key. When you locate an active school, the action can be non-stop with plenty of eater-sized perch and the occasional jumbo making an appearance. It’s not fast and furious right now but good catches are hitting the boat!
Smallmouth Bass
Lake St. Clair is world-famous for its smallmouth bass fishery, and summer is prime time. These bronze backs are aggressive, powerful, and willing to crush a variety of presentations. From shallow flats to deeper transitions, the bass are spread out and feeding heavily. Watching a big smallmouth chase down a bait in clear water never gets old. With water temps steadily on the rise, I expect some action is the river to start taking off!
Muskie Casting
As weed beds develop and baitfish gather, muskies become more active and predictable. Casting bucktails and large rubber baits around weed edges in 12-15ft of water has given us the most action.
There’s simply nothing like seeing a massive Muskie appear boatside after following your lure all the way in. It’s the moment Muskie anglers live for!
Summer is here, and the Multi-Species Factory is firing on all cylinders.
